Food Wars: Review
Did someone say food? Oh, I thought I heard someone mentioned food- because I love food. I mean, who doesn't? Lol. What's good geng? Anyone realised compared to the previous Januaries, this one is moved quite fast? I come your way with another anime I finished watching (at least the first season of it). And it’s no other than the most exotic show I have personally watched so far; ladies and gentlemen: Food Wars. Be sure you’re not hungry when watching this show. Please watch out for SPOILERS. Without further ado, IKUZOR!!!
Food Wars is the first non-action anime show I have watched so far but it does feel like one because although there are no hands thrown, these mur'fuckers do be fighting. This show is about a boy, Soma Yukihira who enrolls in one of the best and elite culinary schools to become a full time chef and surpass his father’s cooking skills. In doing so, he must face and battle some of the world’s best chefs to prove himself and hone his cooking skills. Pretty boring right? That's the kind of vibe the synopsis gives but this show is far from boring. It is very intriguing and one of the few non-action anime that catches your attention from beginning to end. If you like food or enjoy cooking like me, it’s definitely going to give you orgasms. This show clearly has everything to do with food but has way too horny scenes. Yes, you heard me right. Too many horny scenes. This show is way too horny to be a food and cooking show. Now I feel like I have said “horny” too much. Damn, there I go again. There are no sex scenes but trust me, nothing prepares you for what people do when they see food. This show is clearly PG 18 (yet they say cartoons are for children).
Have you watched The God Of High School? Or better yet, any other action show that put people against each other to fight for supremacy or whatever the fuck? Food Wars is exactly like those shows except take out the fighting battles and replace them with cooking battles. This show is hella competitive. The God of High School is not even that competitive compared to Food Wars, if we are being honest. Literally every character with screen time or that has been introduced so far is stupid great at cooking and when some of these battles start you can not actually tell who is going to win and who is going to lose. Sometimes even the MC has his hands full with some of the side characters.
Another thing that really impressed me in the show was the attention to detail. Every food that was cooked- whether it was a major or minor dish- would be elaborated into detail which like I said, is impressive. If you know your food or your cooking, I don't think you'd miss anything. Also, for a Japanese cooking show, it was quite nice to see that they did not only prepare Japanese cuisines.
Personally, I love comedy or anything that makes me laugh and this show did that for me. The comedy content in this show satisfied my urge to laugh and I couldn't get enough of it. The jokes made in the show landed well and that's the type of thing that makes my life whole.
There is this thing about watching food related stuff be it movies, T.V shows, food documentaries or even commercials. These things always make you hungry and sometimes in the most annoying way. What makes it more annoying is the fact that you don't get hungry for another food but rather the food you are seeing on your screen. Food Wars brings that kind of appetite whetting feeling to your throat (well at least for me cos I really like food). With that said, the show does well to keep its focus on food. You are made to understand that it is food we are talking about and nothing else. I mean it’s literally in the title.
Moving on, let me talk about the characters. I think this show does well when it comes to its character developments. It allows you to know whoever is getting more screen time. There is one character I would like to highlight on, the school director or principal Nakiri Sanzaemon. That man looks too much like an OP character from an action anime. For a culinary school principal, this man looks like he is ready to fight with Netero from Hunter X Hunter at any given moment. He looks ready to beat the shit out of Naruto and Kurama if they move a claw out of line. He is not shown a lot but every time he is on, you can straight up tell he is a bad ass and in the wrong show.
Earlier I talked about how our MC Yukihira Soma sometimes struggles when he goes head to head with some of the chefs in cooking battles. I would like to address how remarkably subtle plot armor works for Soma. Quite impressive if you ask me. He is in the middle like, _"yes you are the main character and a great chef no matter the circumstance but you are still a child and you still know nothing_". Also, another thing I found really interesting was Soma's relationship with his father. I like to call it a long distance father-son-relationship. I like how he is not present in his everyday life but the impact is very visible. I like the understanding they have and how they are making it actually work. This show shows parenting in a different way than most others which, if you look at with an open mind is quite beautiful.
